Discussion Groups > Need Union at Comcare

I recently recieved a voicemail from our branch manager. She states Seiu was trying to get into Comcare in Burlington and that area. They want to have a meeting at the office with free chinese food to discuss union attempts. I'm sure it's to persuade us to have no contact with the union. But how could the union find us to help us we all go house to house only know each other by first name they have us separated and there is no way for us to unite. Us PSW's get $13.84 per hour and use our own vehicles to travel house to house. I would love a union, pay increase, pension plan and to get paid for holidays. They call us elect to work so they don't have to pay us time for holiday's we don't work and if you do work the holiday all you get is 1.5 not 2.5 rate of pay.l Mostly security is an issue for when one is injured on the job they have professionals at head office who's job is to dispute your wsib claim and force you into modified duties at the risk of your own safety. at least with a union there would be support and someone on your side. How can the union unite us in niagara?

Lee: Just for the record Red Cross is organized under SEIU Local 1 Canada. Any chance you could switch agencies?

Homecare is in serious need of a pay increase. The companies that pick up contracts through CCAC are thieves, they truly are. Less then 14.00 an hour to drive around at your expense and deliver care. The future does not look to bright for healthcare companies as more and more people are not getting into this field because of the low pay scale. What PSW's do on a daily basis should be rewarded with a higher wage, thats the bottom line. The old days for this profession are coming to an end as there will be PSW shortages in the coming future. As the baby boomer generation gets older, things should be interesting in terms of PSW's demand. At the end of the day, we do what we do, but I'm finding if better opportunities arise in a different profession PSW's will jump ship and go where the money is better to support their families. We have to take care of ourselves first before we can take care of others. These agencies better get their head out of their ass and do what's right. It's time to give p a bigger piece of the pie. If you agencies don't like that then you can go and visit a client in the early morning or late evening and do what needs to be done.
